Know your fruit


This small berry is native to mountainous regions of Asia and Europe. It is believed that currants were already eaten by Palaeolithic humans who obtained most of their food from wild plants and animals.

Currants contain fibre, which facilitates intestinal passage, and minerals such as potassium, iron and calcium. However, the most characteristic trait of these berries is their high concentration of natural pigments (anthocyanins and carotenoids) which have powerful antioxidant action.

Currants are also known for their laxative properties, and their role in cholesterol reduction and fat burning.
