Peaches are native to China, where they were highly prized for their rejuvenating properties – in fact, they were seen as a symbol of immortality. From China they were brought to Persia (their botanical name Prunus persica means “Persian apple”) and eventually to the West.
Peaches are a source of vitamins A and C, B-vitamins (especially B3), and minerals like potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium and iron, which prevents iron-deficiency anaemia. They also help wound healing and prevent constipation thanks to their laxative effect.
However, the most important quality of peaches is their high carotene content, which accounts for their yellowish colour. These substances have antioxidant properties and help to protect our arteries and stay young longer. They also provide improved vision and beautiful, healthy skin.
